From the point of view of enlightenment, nobody does anything, they just think they do. The whole of what is called life has the reality of a television program. What is Real, i.e that which can be truly known, is being, and being is beyond time and space and so beyond any kind of action, it just is. Let us say that the human situation is like a person who goes into a cinema to watch a film, the film is so good that they forget they are sitting in a cinema and become completely engrossed in the film. Self realization is that event when the viewer realizes that they are watching a film, they become self aware. What happens next? The first thing you want to do is to shake everybody else in the cinema, to wake them up to reality. But is that the right thing? In order to conclude that it is the right thing to do, one must know why they entered the cinema in the first place, and why they proceeded to forget that they ever came in, and why and how they came to believe that what the film shows is reality. These are not easy questions, perhaps we are all here to live our life just as it is, waking people up from their dream state might interfere with some vital process. Better to be on the safe side and not interfere. In this way, life after enlightenment can be just the same as before.
As the Zen saying goes “Before enlightenment chop wood, carry water. After enlightenment chop wood carry water”
So why does enlightenment exist? Why does the cinema exist? why does the show exist? why do we enter and why do we forget?
No idea, meanwhile I am missing the show!
