A mixed race half Jewish half Latin American man confronts a young African American teenager within the limits of their joint residential area, the Jewish Latino is armed and calls the police to say he suspects the teenager, the police tell him not to approach and not to get involved further, nerver the less he proceeds to confront the young boy, with tragic consequences.
This sad story is full of misperceptions and misundertandings, even my rendering of it above will trigger all sorts of different reactions depending on who you are and what your life experiences have been. If Zimmerman had listened to the Police , Martin would be alive, if he had not had so many asumptions clouding his judgement, if he had been properly trained to handle a firearm.
We live in a culture full of misconceptions, misunderstandings, prejudgements, it is in the media in our films and music and in the stories we tell ourselves about who we are.
Yoga, true Yoga is about clearing the mind of all these false ideas and perceptions, about understanding the difference between Reality and what we think is real, about understanding how we are prisoners of past and present conditioning, and ultimately it is about knowledge of the Self.
When we finally understand who we are, we understand the nature of each and every other human being, that we are essentially the same, that there is a unity of essence which defines what it means to be human, and this realization brings with it freedom, the only true freedom that is possible.
Trayvon Martin is dead, Zimmerman although acquited, will live a life diminished in quality, he killed an unarmed boy and will live with that every day, many people are angry.
This situation, and countless others like it all over the world, from domestic abuse to all out war, could have been avoided, if the ancient techniques of self realization and freedom had been available and made use of, if we cleaned our minds as often as we shower or back up our computer disk, to remove the conditioning and veils that obscure our vision, to realize that humanity is one, everything else comes second.
